Mac Book Pro

New Mac Book Pro line of Apple laptops look very good! My black MacBook (I believe this one is the second generation of the first model MacBook) is doing fine and I probably won't need to get a new one in these days, but they sure look awesome. And getting cheaper. Always a good thing.

(13 inch models seem to have a few features taken out, so watch out if you are looking at those)

Long weekend, AirMac Extreme, my cousin getting married

The first week of May is known as "Golden Week" in Japan. There are several national holidays scattered around on the last week of April and the first week of May. Although exactly how many days off you'd get depends on the calendar of that year, you'd get at least several extra days off. Which is always nice.


So I'm in the middle of a 'weekend' that lasts until Wednesday this week. This week I'll be going to the office on Thursday and Friday only. They might as well make them holidays too if you ask me, especially this year- there aren't much stuff going on anyway, and with the calendar like this people aren't particularly motivated to take care of what's still happening:-P (some companies are making it mandatory for their employees to take extra days off- they'd rather keep their factories off so there will be less inventory)

I would say I'm taking full advantage of this long weekend. I have finished reading a book (rather crappy book on global economy), may finish another one (a thriller by this guy named Barry Eisler), and may finally start reading that biography of Truman Capote. I have watched the movie The Mist (didn't really like it- especially the ending. Also, I hate movies with religious fanatics in them. Unless they are devoured alive by zombies), and will watch a zombie movie 28 Weeks Later in case the actual zombie apocalypse is upon us.

Also I have spent this morning setting up my new AirMac Extreme. Ditched AirMac Express, something's definitely not working right with that one. Took me about 45 minutes to hook it up and figure out how to configure it- now the network's up and running, the whole network's in 'stealth' mode and all my devices' MAC address memorised  so no war driving will take place here. Tried Xbox 360 and Xbox Live is running well.
I like Apple, but they really should do something about their crap documentation; you may have noticed this if you own an iPod, but their manual/guide/whatever is always poorly documented. I mean, if you attach an manual, you might as well make it something actually useful, don't you think??

And I have found out my cousin is getting married. The girl's from Okinawa I believe, at least they met in Okinawa. (It's an island at southern end of Japan, famous for relaxed atmosphere, musicians like Namie Amuro, and a big U.S. military base) They are handling the matters in kind of a 'modern' way, no big wedding ceremony, just a small party at a hotel buffet with family and close friends. Cool. 
I'm mildly aware that this turn of event may result in some family members start looking at Yours Truly, thinking "he should be doing the same soon" or something. Whatever. I'm too busy concerned about the zombie apocalypse. And this chick I met in a certain Roppongi hideout. And the new shop attendant at my local Tsutaya (Japanese version of Blockbuster) who is the cutest I've seen there ever. Oh, and I just picked up the game Mirror's Edge in a bargain bin (more on this later).

Unsure about new MacBook

I'm not sure if I like what I'm reading about new MacBook/ MacBook Pro. I haven't even seen the real thing but a track pad made of glass on a mobile machine doesn't inspire me with confidence. No button to click (apparently, the entire pad works as clickable space)... Hmm.... Also, even though I'm a fan of Mac their first generation hardware seems to have some kind of glitch here and there. Their changing the entire motherboard is another cause of worry.


On the other hand, the last generation of current laptops may be on sale right now to clear the shelf. They may be the bargain I should check out, at least the last model on the same architecture would mean the least possibility of hardware glitches.

Until I watched the live DVD "Beside You in Time", I've never seen Nine Inch Nails playing live. I didn't know they would rock! Kind of a good surprise I guess.


But one thing kept catching my attention. With his hair cut short and wearing black pants and black t-shirt, Trent Reznor looked so much like Steve Jobs... (^^;

ナイン・インチ・ネイルズの新しいライブDVD「Besides You in Time」を見ました。これ見るまでNINがライブでプレイする姿って見たことなかったんだけど、テクノ系ロックのユニットとは思えない位ロックしてて驚きましたー。

一つだけすごい気になったのが、髪を短く切って黒いズボンと黒いTシャツ着たトレント・レズナー、見れば見るほどスティーブ・ジョブスに似てるんだよね。。。

Bye bye LAN cable

My network has gone wireless. So far everything seems to be running just fine. Encription has been done, MAC addresses have been registered, and my network has gone "off the radar". AirMac Express is handling the job okay.

AirMac Express

I need to look into going Wi-Fi. I realize the new version of AirMac Extreme won't come out until some time next month, and wondering its little brother, AirMac Express, might do the job. I did a quick check on several Japanese Mac-related discussion boards, some say its wireless reach radius is not good (fine by me, I'm more worried it being too big so some stranger can do "war driving" on the network"), others say the connection gets cut off from time to time. But it all depends on the environment, so I'm wondering if I should not be counting too much on Apple in this field....


Anyone has used this? Did it cause any problem to you? How do you like it?

Mac Book

I've been test driving my new Mac Book (it's the black one, yay (^^)v). The first time it came out, I was very tempted but decide to wait out a bit longer as I read some problems and technical issues being reported on user forums and にちゃんねる. I waited even more after the slightly upgraded Core 2 Duo version came out, made sure not major issues have been reported and made my purchase.

So far it seems to be running fine. I'll put up a photo of it in one of these days.
